  • How big should my map be?

It is recommended that you keep your map sizes reasonable in scope. New users should stick to 2km x 2km maximum for their first maps while learning WorldPainter. Map size growth is exponential, this image shows you how a 4km x 4km map is 16 times larger than a 1km x 1km map. This means […]

Map size growth is exponential, this image shows you how a 4km x 4km map is 16 times larger than a 1km x 1km map. This means up to 16x the amount of work needed to detail it. Most long-term map makers rarely go over 8km x 8km due to the amount of work and time needed to make a detailed map worth playing on. Anything over this requires extensive planning, time, and a good level of skill with WorldPainter. More details here.

  • What does the Populate layer do?

Populate is a flag set in chunks that instructs Minecraft to finish populating it. It is wholly controlled by Minecraft and may work differently depending on your version. Populate does not work for versions 1.14 to 1.17. Populate does not work on superflat worlds. This includes worlds with endless borders as those are superflat worlds.

    Learn the basics

We recommend a couple of youtube tutorials, that will teach you the required basics for worldpainter in a very short time:

    Lord Dakr’s tutorial serie

    Lord Dakr’s older tutorial series

    Lerfings 20 minute quickfire tutorial

discord community guides for more specific topics

Get started with your own map

Open worldpainter and start painting your own map. Export it to minecraft and see if you like the results.

We recommend to start on a map that is 2 x 2 km big and practice your art.
We highly discourage starting with large 20×20 projects, so far we have not seen a new artist actually complete one.

The community provides a large database of downloadable content too:

TODO schematics for trees, rocks, etc

    TODO custom terrain brushes

Check the tutorials category for more info on how to achieve specific outcomes when painting. If you have trouble, read the noob tagged posts or join our discord community.

How do I add custom ores to my map?

You can control how ores (and any block you like, really) are added to the underground using underground pockets layers. You can use this feature to add modded ores and resources to maps too. Read the guide here: making and using custom underground pocket layers

  • Why are there no structures in my map?

Structures only generate in WorldPainter-created areas in some versions of Minecraft. If you check the box, they will still generate in Minecraft-generated areas. If structures do not generate, you will need to add them yourself either with schematics or the `/place` command (1.19 or later). //TODO: needs verification if villages actually spawn on export pre-1.19

  • Why is there nothing in my map?

WorldPainter will not generate a world for you. You will need to sculpt the terrain yourself and instruct it where to add details such as vegetation and boulders. You can do this with custom object layers or have Minecraft do it for you with the Populate layer (excluding versions 1.14 to 1.17).

  • Why are there all these holes in my terrain?

You chose “grass” instead of “grass_block” in your custom terrain. “Grass” is the plant; “grass_block” is the block. Change your custom terrain and try again.

  • My schematics seem to be floating in the air. How can I fix this?

Within your custom object layer, double click your schematics and tick “extend foundation to ground”
